The New Drug More Dangerous Than Fentanyl

In multiple states, such as Tennessee and Florida, law enforcement has identified a new synthetic opioid, Cychlorphine, being mixed into counterfeit prescription pills. Cychlorphine is ten times more potent than fentanyl and is linked to many new overdose deaths.

What makes cychlorphine even more deadly is that tests are not widely available for it. Most drug panels test for common and more established drugs. Since cychlorphine is a new synthetic drug, first responders and health professionals who don’t have access to more specialized tests won’t be able to save those who overdose.

Narcan can be used to revive someone who has overdosed on cychlorphine, but they may need several doses. This means first responders may not know to use multiple doses to revive an overdosed individual, and they may die. Or, if cychlorphine use becomes widespread, first responders may run out of resources because of using multiple Narcan doses on one individual.
