Controlled Substances Allowed to be Prescribed Online Through 2024

At the beginning of the pandemic, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which regulates medications with potential for abuse, allowed controlled substances like Adderall and Xanax to be prescribed by a physician through telehealth services. The DEA was supposed to let this provision lapse, but the agency has allowed these provisions to continue through the end of 2024.

“We recognize the importance of telemedicine in providing Americans with access to needed medications, and we have decided to extend the current flexibilities for six months while we work to find a way forward to give Americans that access with appropriate safeguards,” DEA Administrator Anne Milgram stated after the decision was announced.

It remains undecided if these telehealth allowances will be a permanent means of prescribing drugs or if the DEA will recommend phasing it out in the future.
