Wisconsin Passes Law for Tougher Penalties for Reckless Drug-Related Homicides

Last week, Governor Tony Evers signed the 2023 Wisconsin Act 29, which increases the penalty for those involved with drug-related homicides. The law moved drug-related homicide from a Class C felony to a Class B felony.

Previously, Wisconsinites guilty of these charges would receive a fine of up to $100,000, up to 40 years in prison, or both. Under the new law, the guilty party would receive up to 60 years in prison.

Representative Allen gave a chilling statement about the new law: “I say woe to the merchants of death, woe to those who are dealing drugs, because we’re coming after you, and we’re going to put you behind bars and keep you off the streets.”

Lawmakers hope the new felony charges will help deter drug dealers, but they know that treatment and prevention protocols are also needed.

The law was put into motion after a college freshman died after taking what he thought was Percocet but was 100% fentanyl.

“Far too many Wisconsinites have lost their lives or loved ones to opioids and other harmful substances, and we must do everything we can to stop these tragedies and invest in efforts to treat substance use across our state,” Governor Evers said in a statement about the new law.
