COVID-19 Impact on the Opioid Crisis

Opioid addiction was already a crisis before COVID-19. Months later, where are we now?

The Overdose detection mapping application program reports that opioid overdoses increased in March 2020 by 18% compared to the same month in 2019, 29% in April 2020, and 42% in May 2020.

In 2019, the United States experienced a record of almost 71,000 opioid-related deaths. But in 2020, over 40 states have already reported an increase in opioid-related deaths during the pandemic.

“Drug users are doubly vulnerable right now. They are vulnerable in terms of increased risk of relapse, increased risk of misuse during the pandemic, but they’re also at increased risk for being infected by Covid and having adverse reactions to Covid,” said Dr Magdalene Cerda.

Due to the pandemic, many rehab centers and short-term housing have closed. This further hampers the recovery process for drug users.

Cerda is calling for all means of support for drug users: social and economic benefits, such as workplaces with sustained unemployment benefits, mental health, and substance abuse care. As an employer, you can be the first step in helping an addict recover.

The Effects of Marijuana Post-Surgery

Scientists continue to learn about the effects drugs have on our bodies, and marijuana is no different.

Many marijuana users smoke or ingest the substance to relieve bodily pain. However, according to a new study, using marijuana before undergoing a surgical procedure can make your recovery pain significantly worse.

“There is some evidence that cannabis may be beneficial for chronic and nerve pain. However, early research suggests that this is not the case for acute pain such as for surgery of a broken leg,” said lead author and anesthesiology resident Dr. Ian Holmen.

In addition to increased post-surgical pain, people who used weed before surgery also need more anesthesia during surgery. This can be risky, especially for the elderly or those with chronic illnesses. Marijuana users also needed more opioids during recovery, which can lead to a new addiction.

How does this study impact you?

“…patients [must] tell their physician anesthesiologist if they have used cannabis products prior to surgery to ensure they receive the best anesthesia and pain control possible, including the use of non-opioid alternatives,” Holmen said.

It’s also advisable to not use cannabis before a surgical procedure and talk with your doctor about detoxing from marijuana use before surgery.

COVID-19 Causes Surge in Illegal Drug Use

No one would argue that 2020 has been a crazy and stressful year. With so many uncertainties, anxiety and depression have steadily climbed. In order to cope with stressful situations, anxiety, and/or depression, many people have turned to illegal drugs for comfort.

Illegal drug use was already on the rise before the pandemic, but COVID-19 has increased positive drug tests substantially:

“The positivity rate increase from January to May 2020 was 21.57% for marijuana, 16.67% for amphetamines, 5.19% for opiates, and 51.72% for cocaine.”

Although 2019 also saw a rise in amphetamine and marijuana positivity rates, the pandemic has exacerbated the problem. This can be noted with cocaine, which was decreasing from May to December of 2019, but the pandemic has caused cocaine use to bounce back.

For the safety of employees and consumers, it’s vital that employers begin stringent pre-employment and random drug testing. Further, employers must continue heightened drug testing after the pandemic has ended due to the addictive nature of drugs.

Positive Drug Tests at an All-Time High

Quest Diagnostics has released the findings of their 2019 study on positive drug tests. According to the study, U.S. workers tested positive for illicit drugs at the highest rate in 16 years. This trend could continue in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 9 million samples of general workforce and safety-sensitive employees were taken and examined by Quest Diagnostics researchers. 4.5% of the samples were positive, which is the highest percentage since 2003. This was an increase from 4.4% in 2018.

“There is no question that before COVID-19, rates of workplace drug positivity were trending in the wrong direction,” said Barry Sample, senior director of science and technology for Quest Diagnostics. “The enormous strain caused by COVID-19 may prove to be an accelerant on this disturbing trend. Organizations will need to consider the impact of COVID-19 not only on workplace safety but also as a health concern for their employees for some time to come.”

The study also found that over a 5-year period from 2015 to 2019, the increased positive rates were predominately in the West and Midwest regions, where methamphetamine rates increased almost 78%, cocaine positivity increased 53%, and marijuana increased 24%.

Marijuana continues to be the most commonly-detected illegal drug.

Wisconsin Has Double Anticipated Opioid Overdoses

No one argues that COVID-19 has disrupted everyday life. Lack of work, piling bills, needy children, and so much more, has created an overwhelming burden. Anxiety and depression have run rampant, and with it, a substantial increase in drug use.

For Wisconsin, the drug war against opioids is especially troubling. There have been more than twice as many suspected overdoses during the pandemic than during the same time last year.

According to preliminary figures, there are 325 overdoses from March through July 13. In 2019, there were 150 overdoses during the same time span.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services secretary, Andrea Palm, explained that financial pressures and isolation brought on by the pandemic have exacerbated substance abuse problems. More users have turned to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and isotonitazene.

“We know that the pandemic as a whole has caused increased stress and anxiety in just about everybody and anybody,” said Paul Krupski, director of Opioid Initiatives at DHS. “And for individuals who have struggled with substance use and may be currently in treatment for that, this adds an extra layer to the challenges that they are encountering during this pandemic.”

While this is an incredibly scary time, there are many support lines for those who have been caught in addiction. If you or a loved one struggles with drug addiction, don’t hesitate to find the help you need.

FDA Drafts CBD Product Guidelines

The rise of CBD popularity–especially during the COVID-19 pandemic–has a number of citizens, authorities, and policymakers concerned. This is because very few regulations are in place to ensure the safety or quality standards of CBD products. And in fact, an FDA study found that many CBD products are markedly off in how much CBD and THC are present in CBD products.

All that is about to change.

In the middle of July, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally published a draft guidance on developing cannabis-based drugs.

The guidance is limited to the development of human CBD drugs and does not cover other products, such as edibles, beverages, and gummies. The FDA is still developing regulations that allow CBD to be marketed as a food item or dietary supplement.

Instead, the guidance emphasizes safety and quality procedures, such as where companies may obtain cannabis for their product and providing proof of a consistently manufactured quality product.

The guidelines have separate sections for cannabis derived from marijuana and hemp, each with their own regulations.

While these guidelines are a step in the right direction, the FDA has a long way to go before finalizing and enforcing them. Until then, it’s important to perform routine and randomized drug testing with your employees, especially if an employee appears intoxicated.

At Nationwide Drug Testing Service, our staff is not only understanding and considerate, but knowledgeable as well. From the moment you contact us, you can expect to deal with a professional, well-trained Representative who will be with you throughout the entire process.

Half of CBD Products Contain THC

Although the popularity of CBD oil continues to surge, there’s a lot we still don’t know about CBD. As concerns continue to rise, the FDA conducted a sampling study of the current CBD marketplace to determine the extent to which products are mislabeled or adulterated, according to a report.

The FDA gathered a list of 500 CBD and hemp products sold online. The FDA eventually tested 147 of these for 11 cannabinoids, including CBD and THC.

Two products didn’t contain any CBD at all, even though the label claimed it did. 102 products listed a specific amount of CBD in the product, but only 45% of these contained CBD within 20% of the amount indicated.

The study also tested CBD and THC concentrations in the food and beverage industry: edibles, beverages, and gummy items. These products generally tested in line with the overall results of the study.

As for THC, the study found that 49% of products contained more THC than the limit of quantification (LOQ). At least one product contained enough THC to cause physical effects.

The FDA concluded that more testing was needed, as the study was too small a sampling to draw any conclusions about the CBD market. However, other authorities say the study is evidence that firm regulations are needed.

Either way, it’s your right and responsibility as an employer to perform routine and random drug tests, especially if your employees appear intoxicated.

At Nationwide Drug Testing Service, our staff is not only understanding and considerate, but knowledgeable as well. From the moment you contact us, you can expect to deal with a professional, well-trained Representative who will be with you throughout the entire process.

CBD Oil Consumption is Questionable for CMV Drivers

CBD continues to grow in popularity and is used by millions of Americans to relieve ailments, reduce anxiety, and help them relax. However, there is cause for caution against consuming CBD products, especially for CMV drivers.

CBD products are labeled as containing no THC–the element that results in intoxication–and yet, THC may still be present in the product.

This becomes problematic for CMV drivers. Driving under the influence of alcohol is obviously illegal, but many don’t stop to consider the effects of CBD oil.

CBD oil may make you sleepy or reduce your overall alertness. CMV drivers should know how CBD products affect them personally before driving, and should never take more than their usual dose while driving.

Equally as important, the US Department of Transportation has a zero-tolerance approach to CBD. That means if you test positive for CBD artifacts, you have grounds for termination.

If you are or are considering consuming CBD products, make sure to carefully research the CBD product you consume. Not all CBD products are created equally, and some could cause you to test positive on a random drug screening.

Is Drug Addiction Genetic?

Do you ever wonder why some people aren’t easily addicted to drugs? How they can experiment but never get addicted, or their addiction is easily broken? Is there more to the association of parents causing their children’s drug use besides early exposure?

Korea Brain Research Institute has found that dopamine D2 receptors (DRD2s) in cholinergic interneurons (ChINs) play a crucial role in cocaine addiction.

In the study, addiction-susceptible mice demonstrated an increased level of DRD2 expression and a reduced level of cell activation. This affects the activation and synaptic plasticity of downstream neurons, causing susceptibility to drug addiction.

In other words, drugs of abuse increase the dopamine concentration in the brain and activate dopamine receptors, which results in intense craving for drugs. The DRD2 expression in genetics could explain why some individuals are more susceptible to drugs than others. Watch this video to learn more:

This can be enlightening and relieving for individuals caught in addiction, no matter if they are more susceptible or not. It can empower them to fight against the pitfalls of addiction by seeking the appropriate measures of help. Some may need more help than others, and thanks to this study, we now know that’s not a sign of weakness, but genetic predisposition.

As an employer, you can be the first handhold to an employee struggling with addiction. That often starts with admitting an addiction is present.

Oklahoma Breaks Records for Medical Marijuana Sales

Sales for medical marijuana have been steadily increased in the state of Oklahoma. In the past four months, every preceding month has surpassed the previous month in sales. In April alone, Oklahomans spent $73.8 million on medical marijuana.

Dispensaries are fairly new to Oklahoma, so the surge of demand is fairly common. But the rapid uptick of demand also coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic that forced individuals to work from home and increased stress, depression, and anxiety.

Although this report specifically details Oklahoma, it’s not too much of a stretch to conclude that other states have increased medical marijuana usage, as well:

What could this mean for you as an employer?

Stress, anxiety, and depression are plaguing millions of Americans, now more than ever. It is possible that your employees will consume medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription medication. It may not be a requirement to inform you of their medical marijuana use.

Just like any other drug, medical marijuana can be abused and cause side effects when used improperly. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of marijuana abuse and be ready to assist your employees with appropriate steps of recovery.

White House Seeks FDA’s Counsel Regarding Marijuana

The White House is currently seeking the FDA’s counsel regarding marijuana and CBD usage.

Very few details are known about the project, titled “Cannabis and Cannabis-Derived Compounds: Quality Considerations for Clinical Research.” However, an FDA spokesperson indicated that it is examining guidelines and regulations for CBD usage. Once outlined, CBD could be sold as dietary supplements and foods with the FDA’s approval.

“We recognize that there is substantial public interest in marketing and accessing CBD for a variety of products. We are working toward a goal of providing additional guidance, and have made substantial progress,” FDA said in a statement. “There are many questions to explore regarding the science, safety, effectiveness and quality of products containing CBD, and we need to do our due diligence.”

In the meantime, the FDA still encourages users to consider the risks of CBD products, as seen in this video:

What could this mean for you as an employer?

With FDA-approved marijuana products in the near future, it’s probable that more and more employees will consume marijuana. Whether an employee is using marijuana for recreational or medical purposes, they most likely won’t tell you about their marijuana use.

Just like any other drug, marijuana—even medical marijuana can be abused. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of marijuana abuse and be ready to assist your employees with appropriate steps of recovery.

COVID-19 Is Impacting Illegal Drug Availability

COVID-19 is changing countless aspects of everyday global life, even illegal drug use.

A recent study reports that “many countries across all regions have reported an overall shortage of numerous types of drugs at the street level, as well as price increases for consumers on the black market and reductions in purity.”

Although many countries have noted a decrease in illegal drug use, the shortage has some drug users turning to dangerous alternative substances, such as fentanyl and its derivatives. It’s also increasing the number of IV drug users who are sharing equipment and needles, which carries the risk of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and COVID-19.

The UNODC report soberly reports that the COVID-19 pandemic will drastically change the pharmaceutical and illegal drug markets, but they are unable to draw conclusions at this time. Further study will be needed to understand the consequences COVID-19 has had on this aspect of society. Watch this video to learn more:

CBD Oil Claims to Protect Users from COVID-19 Are False

New York Attorney General Letitia James is on a mission: to stop false companies from falsely advertising coronavirus preventions and cures.

As millions of Americans seek to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus, some natural remedy companies have taken the opportunity for financial gain and advertised certain products prevent or cure COVID-19.

One Utah company, Finest Herbalist, advertised that their Pure Herbal Total Defense Immunity Blend offered protection from the virus. James sent a strong cease-and-desist letter to the company demanding that they remove such advertising.

“By misrepresenting the effectiveness of products against COVID-19, companies like Finest Herbalist are giving consumers a false sense of security, putting their very lives at risk,” James said. “Deceptive marketing is never acceptable, especially during a time of crisis; this is a matter of public health and safety.”

Other companies have tried to capitalize on Americans’ fears, as well. One company claimed their air purifiers could filter out COVID-19 droplets with their filters. Alex Jones allegedly sold coronavirus-fighting toothpaste. James also dispatched cease-and-desist letters to these sellers.

CBD distributors are still deemed essential stores and are allowed to remain open. Watch this video for more info:

Riskier Drugs Are About to Hit the Market

Restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are increasing almost every day. More and more governing officials are recommending and enforcing social isolation, the closing of public places, and restricting how often individuals can leave their places of residence. Stress from the current crisis can be particularly troubling from drug addicts, as explained in this video:

Health officials are now warning that such restrictions will lead to adulterated illegal drugs. These altered drugs will be significantly more toxic—and therefore, deadly.

Users of drugs will add additional burdens to an already-taxed healthcare system, either by consuming these dangerous new drugs or by undergoing withdrawal symptoms and needing supplemental healthcare to recover.

To combat these concerns, new guidance measures encourage supplying safe prescription drugs to addicts via home delivery. These could be prescribed via telehealth appointments with a physician. Even though this may seem like an outrageous proposal, it has the potential to save lives.

“We’re dealing with one public health emergency on top of another and the challenges are unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” says Judy Darcy, B.C.’s minister of health and addictions. “Physical distancing is not easy when you are living in poverty, visiting a clinic every day to get your medicine and relying on an unpredictable illegal drug supply.”

How You Can Help Drug Addicts During COVID-19 Pandemic

The social isolation requirements being enforced by most state governments is particularly challenging for those battling drug and/or alcohol addiction. Recovery from drug or alcohol addiction is hugely dependent upon community support.

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous has been moved online, but this is only accessible to those who have the technology to participate. Even virtual meetings can cause further isolated and depressed thoughts as we long to be with friends in person. Without in-person (and for some, virtual) support or meetings, former addicts are left to battle their addiction with very little support.

The COVID-19 pandemic is an especially stressful time for current and former addicts. Is there anything we can do to help?

If you know of a current or former addict, do your best to stay in contact: daily, and sometimes multiple times a day. Encourage them to stay busy either in their place of residence or outside.

This strategy can also be applied to current or former addicts. Reach out to leaders or participants in your AA or NA group, a friend or co-worker who knows your struggle, or family members. Multiple support partners during this time are best so you can talk when the urge to indulge in drugs or alcohol is persistent. Do your best to stay busy and occupied around the house and outside. Can CBD Oil Help in the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Millions of Americans fear contracting the novel coronavirus, and many are seeking out their own treatment or prevention so they can return to work or community events.

Despite the false advertising from CBD oil companies, CBD oil does not protect an individual from contracting COVID-19. But does that mean CBD oil is useless during this time?

In a recent article by Forbes, CBD sales are expected to rise substantially in the coming weeks—but not because it protects from COVID-19. Watch this video to learn more:

Supporters and users of CBD oil claim it helps with a variety of physical and mental ailments, from easing muscle soreness after a heavy workout to reducing anxiety and depression levels. Not only does CBD oil claim many uses and benefits, it’s available in almost any form, from gummies and candy to coffee and tea.

Even though CBD sales may increase in the coming weeks, users must be careful to not consume more CBD than recommended on the label. CBD edibles in particular take longer to give an individual the “high” they are expecting due to the digestion process. Eating too many could send you to the ER—a place we all want to avoid more than ever right now!

Avoid a Trip to the ER With This Advice!

CBD continues to grow in popularity. More and more CBD shops are popping up all over cities and rural towns, and together with online stores, almost everyone has access to thousands of CBD products.

One particular product, CBD edibles, is a popular way to combine the satisfaction of a sweet treat with the high of marijuana. However, health officials warn that the edibles could be an increasing cause of marijuana overdose.

Specifically for individuals who have never used marijuana before, edibles need to be consumed slowly. This is because the “high”-causing compounds in edibles are slowly absorbed in digestion and it will take longer to feel the effects—up to several hours—as compared to the several minutes of inhaling marijuana.

First-time users expecting a quick boost may consume too many edibles and be at risk for an overdose. Seniors and those with low metabolisms are especially at risk. Symptoms of an overdose include a racing heart, anxiety and panic attacks. If an overdose is suspected, a trip to the emergency room is warranted.

To avoid the risk of overdose, health officials recommend waiting several hours between consuming another edible in order to feel the effects and know how your body is responding. Watch this video to learn more about the importance of slowly consuming edibles:

As an employer, it’s important to be informed about CBD edibles and the effect they can have on your employees. Because of their innocent disguise, these may be consumed in your workspace and distributed amongst other employees.

Know the Signs and Symptoms of Prescription Drug Addictions

Have you noticed a change in your employee or loved one since their surgery or since they were in that car accident? Have they been increasingly moody or hostile? Or perhaps more energetic or lethargic?

You having an awareness of the signs and symptoms of prescription drug overuse can be the lifeline someone needs before this overuse turns into addiction!

Prescription drugs are often given as painkillers after a major surgery or accident. Starting off as harmless pills to ease the pain, these can quickly turn into addictive substances as the body becomes dependent upon them. Watch this video to see how quickly a small prescription can turn into an addiction:

Individuals particularly at risk for prescription drug addiction include those who have had previous or a family history of addiction to drugs, tobacco, or alcohol, pre-existing psychiatric conditions, and easy access to prescription drugs.

As the body becomes accustomed to the prescription drug (called tolerance), individuals may notice they need more of the drug in order to feel the same affect. But eventually, a tolerance to the upped dose is acquired, as well. This is an endless cycle, quickly turning from physical dependence into addiction.

Mayo Clinic lists the follow as the symptoms of opioid drug abuse:

  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Feeling high (euphoria)
  • Slowed breathing rate
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Poor coordination
  • Increased dose required for pain relief
  • Worsening or increased sensitivity to pain with higher doses (hyperalgesia)
  • Excessive mood swings or hostility
  • Increase or decrease in sleep
  • Poor decision-making
  • Appearing to be high, unusually energetic or revved up, or sedated

As the individual becomes more addicted, they may engage in risky and illogical behaviors to obtain more drugs, such as:

  • Stealing, forging or selling prescriptions
  • Taking higher doses than prescribed
  • Requesting early refills or continually “losing” prescriptions, so more prescriptions must be written
  • Seeking prescriptions from more than one doctor

If you notice any of these changes to your employee or loved one, it’s important to firmly encourage a physician visit to receive counsel on how to proceed forward. Prescription drug abuse doesn’t go away—it often escalates into using other illegal drugs in order to obtain the “high.” Acting quickly and giving unconditional support is the best way to help your employee or loved one not be overcome by drug abuse!

Meth and Fentanyl Use at All-Time High

A new report released at the beginning of 2020 analyzed over 1 million urine drug tests, and the results are both shocking and sobering.

Between 2013 and 2019, positive urine drug tests for meth have increased six-fold, from 1.4% in 2013 to 8.4% in 2019. Similarly, positive fentanyl tests quadrupled, with just above 1% in 2013 to 5% in 2019. Both drugs were noted to be used in high—or fatal—potency, and often used in combination with other drugs.

With the drastic increase in the use of these drugs, it’s imperative to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meth use and abuse.

Meth is one of the most dangerous drugs on the market that takes a physical psychological toll, both in the short and long term. Meth effects can last for 8 to 24 hours after use, and users may stay awake for several days at a time if they binge-used meth. Some of these immediate effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Increased heart rate
  • Chest pain
  • Suppressed appetite
  • Aggression
  • Insomnia
  • Flushed or itchy skin
  • Muscle twitching
  • Hallucinations
  • Paranoia
  • Raised body temperature

If meth is used over a long period of time, the brain becomes dependent upon the substance—called addiction. Long-term use of meth destroys every body system: respiratory, heart, liver, kidneys, reproduction, digestion, teeth, and skin. Meth also causes psychological effects such as memory loss, depression, paranoia, delusions, and more.

As an employer, you may not know for certain if an employee is using meth. But if an employee exhibits any short or long-term symptoms that are unexplained by other natural, environmental, or circumstantial causes, it is your right—and responsibility—to order a random drug test.  Watch this video for more information on the signs and symptoms of meth use:

Millions Driving Under the Influence… of Drugs

It’s common knowledge that driving under the influence of alcohol is a dangerous practice. The consequences of driving intoxicated can be a matter of life and death (or at the very least, legal repercussions). And still, about 8% of drivers are intoxicated.

But while alcohol DUIs is widely discussed, there is a type of DUI that is rarely debated: altered mental status due to drugs.

A new report from US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 12 million adults had driven under the influence of marijuana in the last 12 months, and 2.3 million of those adults also admitted to driving under the influence of other drugs like cocaine or meth.

This shakes out to be 4.7 percent of Americans driving under the influence of marijuana, and 0.9 percent under the influence of other drugs. Males were more likely to drive under the influence, as were teens aged 16-20. Non-Hispanic, multiracial persons had the highest drug DUI rate at 9.2%.

While these numbers aren’t as high as alcohol use, the fact remains that Americans drive under the influence of drugs. In many ways, driving under the influence of drugs can be more dangerous because a drug’s side effects like delusions, hallucinations, tremors, anxiety, and more, can lead to more hazardous driving. Watch this video to learn more about driving under the influence of drugs:

It’s likely that if an individual will drive under the influence of drugs, they will also appear at their employment under the influence, as well. As an employer, you have the right—and responsibility—to perform random drug tests if you have a reasonable suspicion that an employee is high.

Construction Workers and Miners Have Highest Risk for Drug Overuse

It’s no questions that construction workers and miners have physically demanding jobs. In sometimes brutal weather conditions all year round, hard-hat jobs require extreme physical labor in dangerous situations.

Perhaps then, it shouldn’t be surprising that a new study reveals construction workers and miners are much more likely to use marijuana, cocaine, and opioids.

Construction and extraction workers use opioids more often than all other professions combined at 3.4% vs. 2%; a higher cocaine use at 1.8% vs. 0.8%; and second most likely to use marijuana at 12.3% vs. 7.5%. Only those in service-oriented jobs used marijuana more than construction workers (12.4%).

This means that construction and extraction workers six to seven times more likely to die from an overdose.

The study’s lead researcher Danielle Ompad said the increase of drug use among construction workers comes from the physical labor demands of their job.

“They do experience a quite a bit of pain, and not just from injuries,” Ompad said. “I think a lot of them are prescribed opioids, and when their doctors stop prescribing opioids and their pain is still there, they continue to use them anyway.”

The most likely cause of cocaine use would be to stay awake and alert during hazardous worksite situations and marijuana helps them relax and unwind after stressful day.

The study’s solution proposed a multifaceted approach with screening, treatment of substance abuse, and access to affordable pain management care.

New Technology to Test and Track Heroin Use

A few months ago, Harrow Council in the UK developed an innovative technology fingerprinting system that could detect various drugs by simply taking a fingerprint. While this excellent technology is highly anticipated, another state-of-the-art fingerprint detection technology is in the works.

In a fascinating study published in The Journal of Analytical Toxicology, a team of experts from the University of Surrey describe their fingerprint tool that detects heroin, its metabolite, 6-monoacetylmorphine (6-AM) and other analytes associated with the class A drug.

The tool is sensitive enough to trace heroin and 6-AM through fingerprints in almost every situation imaginable, like “whether someone directly touched the drug, handled it and then thoroughly washed their hands, or had come into contact with heroin via shaking someone else’s hand.”

Dr. Melanie Bailey from the University of Surrey said: “Our team here at the University of Surrey believes that the technology we are developing will make our communities safer and shorten the route for those who need help to beat their addictions. We also believe the technology has scope in other areas, such as confirming whether a patient is taking their medication.”

While technology is always fascinating and advancing, the tool isn’t available yet. So in the meantime, conventional drug testing measures are accurate and reliable.

Game-Changing New Drug Test to Hit the Market Soon

Although recreational and medical marijuana is legal in most states, marijuana use is still a concern for many employers.

Especially for certain occupations like bus drivers, medical professionals, and first responders, even medical marijuana poses a threat to the public if used improperly.

The problem most employers face is that individuals are most impaired by marijuana use within two to three hours after ingestion—which is not enough time to order a drug test to determine if marijuana is the culprit behind a workplace accident or misbehavior.

But all that could change with a new drug test for marijuana that is set to hit the market in 2020.

Doug Boxer from Hound Labs reports on the developing test. He states it’s similar to an alcohol breathalyzer and can detect marijuana use within the two-to-three hour time frame from smoking, vaping, dabbing and ingesting via edibles. It is accurate enough to distinguish recent use from historic use.

“This could be a game changer for employers who are struggling to determine when an employee may have used marijuana — whether it was on the job or off-duty,” said Ben Tievsky, senior associate in the New York office of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.

While employers wait for the breathalyzer to become available, Jennifer Mora, senior counsel in the Los Angeles office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP cautions employers to walk a fine line between ensuring the safety of their workplace and accommodating employees.

Even in states where marijuana use is legal, employers can train managers on impairment signs and use reasonable suspicion checklists. In the case of accommodating a disability, employers can explain to employees that if they come to work appearing under the influence, the individual will be subject to discipline up to and including termination.

Cincinnati High School to Give Mandatory Drug Tests in 2020

One high school in Cincinnati, Ohio, is taking some statistics very seriously.

Ohio is second only to West Virginia for the states with the most opioid overdose-related deaths. Seeking to protect students and make a difference, Badin High School, a Catholic school in the Cincinnati area, announced that beginning in 2020, they will require an annual drug test for their students.

The school administrators state the purpose of the policy is to “provide students with help first and to involve parents or guardians every step of the way.”

Each student will be tested at least once a year. Refusal to abide by the policy counts as a positive test. If a student tests positive, the parents or guardians will be notified and must be evaluated by another professional within 90 days.

A first positive test won’t result in disciplinary action, but after a second positive test, the student will have regular drug tests throughout their enrollment and be given a 10-day suspension. A student who tests positively for a third time must meet with school officials and could face expulsion.

With the ever-climbing rise in youth drug use, the school can be commended for their commitment to see teens say ‘no’ drugs.

Don’t lose your job over your addiction

More than 70% of substance abusers are still employed.

Especially for addicts, it’s easy to shrug off all the warning signs. Distorted and irrational thinking that justifies continued substance use is common. It’s easy for addicts to tell themselves they’ve got their addiction under control, especially if they’re employed.

But as addiction counselor Joel Lewin puts it, “having a job can be both the biggest hindrance and the biggest help to overcoming addiction.”

The fear of losing a job after admitting to substance use is understandable. A former addict himself, Lewin sympathizes, “It feels more manageable to tell yourself you’re not ready for that step, and to put it off, and keep putting it off—until you reach a crisis point at work or at home and change is forced on you.”

But there’s a way for to both save a job and be free from addiction!

Most people think “rehab” when discussing addiction recovery. This leads to uncertainty and understandable procrastination and balking at change. Instead, Lewin recommends addicts getting help in an incremental progression, starting with talking to a former addict or an addiction counselor. Voicing their concerns is the first step towards breaking through addiction and recovering.
